Founded in 2004, Cinechicks produces entertainment projects, unearthed from across the globe, with the aim of humanizing different cultures through entertainment, and reinvesting profits back into local communities. Its mission is to inspire cultural understanding and compassion, and to affect change. It is a multi-media company with a particular interest in women’s lives, cultural studies, African settings, and issues of youth.
Since its launch, Cinechicks has produced: Drumstruck, an Off-Broadway show, of African performers, where each audience member had its own 3-foot djembe (drum), and played along with the cast. The show opened to rave reviews and sell-out audiences for a two year run; the critically-acclaimed, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency movie, based on the international best selling novel by Alexander McCall-Smith and directed by Anthony Minghella; and, the BBC and HBO television series, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, directed by Charles Sturridge and Tim Frywell.
Upcoming Cinechicks’ projects include: the continuing television series of No 1 Ladies’; the Nkosi and Gail Johnson life story, starring Naomi Watts; PTA, a dark comedy about teenage girls and their mothers by the prestigious MacDowell Colony writer, Emily Conbere; After Louie, a stylized look at the end of an era in New York City, by Vincent Gagliostro; and a new comic, an African superhero, Amani: Legend of the Shadow Warrior. Cinechicks is also developing a major documentary and series, Beautiful Heroes, to honor women who lead extraordinary lives dedicated to world change and well-being.
Key to the Cinechicks’ philosophy, a percentage of profits are donated to local communities and charitable causes. In the past, these have included: Nkosi’s Haven, Johannesburg, South Africa; Maitisong Festival, Botswana; Masisukumeni Women’s Crisis Centre, Kwalugedlane, South Africa.
Cinechicks is a founding member of The Memory Box Project, a video project to put those dying of AIDS on camera to preserve their memories as well as their heritage.
